"Law and Terror: A legal analyst argues for a novel solution to the legal wars over terrorism policy: Congress doing its job" -- Miller-McCune magazine, August 2008. This essay and book review looks at policymaking and journalism concerning law in the war on terror.

"Re: Write," a regular column on magazine editing for FPO Magazine, a new quarterly for editors and art directors. My first columnn, "Map Your Story From The Inside Out," gave tips on diagramming stories to fix structural problems and coach writers to turn in a successful revision. It was published in the Winter 2008 issue. The second column, "First, Let's Kill All the Editors," reported in the Spring 2008 issue on how various magazine editors interact with the lawyers who review their copy.

"Renovating the Judge Factory, Part III" -- A daily story for Judicial Reports on a state Assembly hearing to air complaints about New York's system of electing Supreme Court justices. November 21, 2006.

"Winners and Losers" -- How well do our best newspapers explain why courts do what they do? Not nearly well enough, judging from coverage of Samuel Alito's Supreme Court nomination. This analysis was published in 2007 as a chapter in the edited volume Bench Press: The Collision of Courts, Politics and the Media (Stanford University Press).

"Vote for Harriet!!!! The dubious professional distinctions of Harriet Miers," a Slate Jurisprudence column on why the Supreme Court nominee's twin claims to lawyerly fame and legitimacy -- her leadership of the State Bar of Texas and a midsized Texas law firm -- didn't mean that her colleagues considered her tops in her field. October 25, 2005.
